The Families group is a new initiative that was formally started in the Spring of 2021. It rose out of the recognition that ADK-GVC has many, many family memberships but few of these members participate in organized outings or attend the monthly Chapter Meetings. We all know that getting outdoors early in life makes it easier later to encourage adventuring. Our primary task is to engage families to be involved in ADK. Finally, although we are called the Families group, all are welcome. Grandparents can bring Grandkids, Uncles can bring Nieces, Neighbors can bring Neighbors, and Members can meet other Members.
What We Do
As a new initiative we are starting with some ideas and building up to more.
We generally host six family oriented outings a year. The vision for these outings is to include an educational component, a physical component (hiking, biking, paddling), and a craft component. The difficulty of the outing will depend on what we know about the ability levels of the attendees. The ADK-GVC currently organizes regular all-day hikes and 5-8 mile hikes, so we are targeting the under 5 mile category. Input from members will guide us to the transport mode, difficulty, and destination for future outings. We are always interested in new ideas, and fully support first-time Event Leaders (trained by ADK).
We are also planning to include more programs and workshops at our monthly Chapter Meetings. Speakers and presenters are needed. Please contact the Families Chair or our Programs Chair to volunteer to regale us with an epic adventure or share a useful skill.
Our events cater broadly to all ability levels, from first-timer to advanced. You don’t need to be an ADK member to attend events — all are welcome. Join us at one of our upcoming events, and be prepared to have fun, meet new people, and share ideas for future activities.
