Our region of New York State is uniquely blessed with places to take a kayak or canoe with friends and family. And our chapter has a lot of paddlers who know those places and how to enjoy them, safely. Come and join them!
Monday Morning Day-Trippers
This group gets together for leisurely paddles on Monday mornings from 10 am until noon. Each week is a different location. This enables new paddlers to become familiar with lots of places in our region to paddle. The group paddles for about an hour, then stops for snacks and continues for a second hour. The calendar shows the location of each paddle. Paddles start in early May and usually continue until October. Beginners as well as experienced paddlers are welcome.
The group does schedule some longer paddles during the season for folks who would like to paddle the better part of the day.
Weekday Evening and Weekend Paddles
Weekday evening and weekend paddles are also scheduled. Weekday evening paddles will typically launch at 6:00PM, Saturdays at 9:00AM and Sundays at 2:00PM. The duration will be about 2 hours, however the leaders may at times schedule a longer paddle. The information will be on the event calendar, including the location and specifics of the Paddle. These will be great opportunities for families to get out and paddle, along with anyone who is free at these paddle times.
Evening Paddles
We are looking for paddle leaders for both evening paddles and weekend paddles. If you are interested, contact Peg Jacobs or Marcia Barrett for information. You certainly do not have to commit to weekly paddles. Perhaps just a “once-in-a-while paddle” where you can choose the location. They’ll help you with the planning, and assure that you know all the “ins and “outs” of leading a paddle (it’s not hard!!) Co-leaders are a great idea – find a friend that you like to spend paddling time with and send us an email. We’d like to be able to offer more opportunities to our ADK members and community.
Paddle Tour of the Finger Lakes (PTFL)
For an extended challenge that’s geared towards more experienced paddlers, consider the Paddle Tour of the Finger Lakes! Paddling around the perimeter of each of the eleven lakes — almost 400 miles of paddling—may be the challenge of a lifetime. Click here to learn more about PTFL from those who have done it. Completing the PTFL will provide you a great sense of accomplishment, and earn you a special patch from the club. Contact waterways@adk-gvc.org to get started.
Extended Paddling Outings
In the past there have been extended paddle adventures offered. We’re hoping to be able to schedule these again. The last was a wilderness paddling/camping experience at Bog River/Lows Lake.
Be sure to check the calendar for outings and join the paddling email group to hear of late changes in scheduled events. To join the group, see the sidebar.
Note: Most of the paddles are leisurely but be sure to check the event calendar to make sure the paddle is one at your level and your interest. You’re welcome to check with the trip leader if you have any questions. Come, join any paddle and enjoy the wonderful paddling locations we have in our area and the wonderful folks to paddle with!!!
